Now a few from the ground up, Jack London Square in the Port of Oakland. Jack London (1876-1916) grew up in Oakland and spent his childhood playing on the waterfront now memorialized as Jack London Square. It's a mixed-use neighborhood with a monument to London. His adventures as an oyster pirate and sailor inspired his novel, The Sea-Wolf and other stories. This flag flies above the landing where you catch the tourist boats. Best place to take a walk in Oakland is to follow the track around Lake Merritt. Lots of people jog or walk, and people walk their dogs there. A cormorant dries its feathers as the rowing team goes by. The City has numerous vegetarian restaurants within walking distance of the Marriott.
