Medical Marijuana in the News New Attorney General Is Pro Prop. 215 New California Attorney General Bill Lockyer is working with state law enforcement officials and marijuana advocates to find common ground in the struggle to implement Prop. 215. Scott Imler, director of the Los Angeles Cannabis Resource Center in West Hollywood, said, "There's kind of an armistice. Everybody seems genuinely interested in trying to implement Prop. 215 in a responsible way. It is an exciting and vital process." Christy McCampbell, president of the California Narcotics Officers Association, said, "We are all just trying to reach common ground on how to deal with an extremely complex issue." Her association represents the state's 7,000 narcotics officers who opposed Prop. 215 during the 1996 campaign. Governor Gray Davis also supports a positive resolution to this issue. Michael Bustamante, spokesman for Davis, said that the governor "respects the decision of voters with issues that come before the electorate, and clearly voters have spoken as it relates to this law." However, federal law still makes possession and use of marijuana a crime. A federal judge continues to deny Peter McWilliams' request for permission to use marijuana. McWilliams' attorney plans to appeal the ruling. Federal Gov. Confirms Medical Uses of Marijuana A new study by the Institute of Medicine says that marijuana may be effective in easing pain and nausea, and recommends further study. The study also found marijuana to be non-addictive. California state Senator John Vasconcellos (D-Santa Clara), welcomed the report. He said, "With the institute report now in my hip pocket, I will aggressively pursue enactment of legislation this year to provide for a safe and affordable distribution system and to fund clinical research." Attorney General Lockyer said, "The Institute of Medicine report takes an important step toward answering questions about the medical benefits of marijuana. We look forward to the federal government building on this report's findings so that we can wisely implement Prop. 215." Federal Legislation Could Reclassify Marijuana On March 2, 1999, U.S. Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) introduced H.R. 912 which -- if enacted -- would allow states to determine their own medicinal marijuana policies without federal interference. . . . (link to the full story, read the new legislation). Editorial Comment One of the House Republicans, U.S. Rep. Bill McCollum (R-Florida), said: "When smoking a dangerous and highly addictive drug is labeled 'therapeutic,' we are sending the wrong message to our youth." Some people are so sure of their biased opnions that they will ignore even the most abundant evidence to the contrary. We believe that federal officials like McCollum are living in a parallel universe of their own imagination. Hypocritical and brutish politicians like McCollum give kids a worse impression of public life than if the government were passing out heroin. Polls indicate that most Americans are fed up with refer madness propaganda and prefer a sane and sensible drug policy. Prohibition in the 1920s increased crime and violence; politicians like McCollum prefer to stay stuck in the past. We believe that it's time for a change and that phone calls, faxes and emails are our most important tools. If you feel strongly about these issues we invite you to visit the PFPF Activist's Workshop and speak your mind to your federal representatives and the media. If You Use Medical MJ If you use medical marijuana on a daily basis, you are not alone. Many people smoke as much as ten joints a day to combat pain, improve appetite, and provide insipration to go on living. If you use daily marijuana, you may have noticed that you get high the first time of the day you smoke, but after that it might just make you sleepy. You've probably also noticed that the prescription is expensive and hard to fill. To save you money and make life easier, this article offers some ideas on how to reduce the amount you smoke per day. You will learn how to conserve supplies and still get the optimal healing effects from the herb. "Wake and Bake" vs. "Twelve Hour Rule" We all know what wake and bake is and how cool it is to create reality from the time you open your eyes. However, if you shut yourself off completely from ordinary reality, you will lose faith that it exists. If you have a terminal disease, don't worry about it. However, if you are heading toward recovery, you can incorporate reality by following the Twelve Hour Rule. Implement the rule by waiting a full twelve hours from the last time you imbibed. Say you took your last hit at midnight. Wait until noon the following day to have your first of the day. As you become healthier you can raise it to an Eighteen Hour Rule, and then finally reduce your pot intake to once a day, once a week, or once a month, if you so choose. Of course, many people may decide to keep smoking on a daily basis for maintenance. Use a Homeopathic Amount There are two ways to smoke an ounce of pot. One is to roll it into joints and smoke them in a few days or a few weeks. The other is get a single-hitter and use the herb in homeopathic doses. This will make an ounce last three to six months. Try this out for yourself. Go for twelve hours without smoking, then sit down in front of your altar or in a sacred place and take one good hit. Sit calmly with your eyes closed and wait for the pot to take effect. This is how yogis in India use it (see article posted at this site). It may take five or ten minutes, but you will find that you get just as stoned whether you smoke one hit or ten. It's just a matter of waiting for the pot to take effect. Frequency of Use If you use the herb homeopathically, you can make it even more effective if you space out the frequency of hits. Smoking too soon will not get you stoned again. Wait for the first hit to wear off before you take another one. This will work especially well if you eat a healthy meal between each time you smoke. If you smoke too much pot, there's always the chance it can build up in your system and prevent you from getting high again. Take Pot Straight The best way to experience the healing effects of pot is to take it straight. Don't mix it with alcohol or prescription pills. If you have to take other medication, try to taper off. If you have faith that the weed can help you with pain and other disease symptoms, ask your doctor to ween you off all chemical drugs. You may have to increase your pot use at first, but soon you can start to use pot homeopathically and you will be on the road to real recovery without the use of dangerous chemical drugs.
