IT WAS 1968...IN ENGLAND...IN THE ARMY...I LEARNED TO "PLAY" LISTENING
TO DYLAN AND DONOVAN..ALL PLECTRUM AND KINDA "CLOCKWORK"....ON A RED
PLASTIC GUITAR....THE NECK OF WHICH FELL OFF IF YOU DIDN'T HOLD IT
RIGHT...THEN SOMEONE PLAYED "BLIND JOE DEATH" AND I THREW THE GUITAR
AND PLECTRUM OUT OF THE OPEN WINDOW...MORE THAN 30 YEARS AND MANY
GUITARS LATER, I HAVE PLAYED MY WAY THROUGH COUNTLESS FAHEY
MASTERPIECES AND ALWAYS REMAINED MORE THAN 20 YEARS BEHIND HIM...I ONLY
FOUND OUT LAST WEEK (27/5/2001)THAT JOHN HAD SHUFFLED OFF HIS IMMORTAL
COIL....SHATTERED HERE...
JOHN...DEAR JOHN...I WOULDN'T HAVE A PLAYING STYLE IF IT WASN'T FOR
YOU.....
YOU ARE NOT GONE JOE DEATH...YET AGAIN YOU ARE TRANSFIGURED...
ETERNAL THANKS

Thank You, John, for being the one honest person in the music business, who not only loved music but treated us so well. I'll never forget how you treated Peter with great kindness when he walked in Tacoma Records with his demo tape. And I thank you for trusting me to take over the reigns and produce Peter's first album. Let's here it for the Turtles!

It was a sad day when I heard of John's death. When I was living in
Silverton, Oregon I had the chance to see him perform. It was great to
see someone you had always admire and respected live and perform so
close to where you had lived.

To a great guitar player and teacher - Rest in Peace John.

John, I will miss you alot you were a great friend. I remember growing up in Takoma Park with you, and one day you walked me to school at S.S.I. because I did not want to go to school. You made a big impressment on me, you were very kind and gentle. Thank you for the phone calls when I had my knee replacement. We must have talked an hour. I'll see you one day my friend - you and your music, art and stories will always be in my heart. Love you Linda

Lots of magnificent journeys, played the old blind joe death stuff for
my children in the 60s, they're grown now and playing the stuff too.
I'll never forget john who took me back home to the old south, a place I
left many years ago.

Hi Friends,
webmaster here. Apologies for taking so long to update the website after
John's passing. This guestbook was getting big, so I moved all the old
signatures to my server and cleared the page. Just click on the link
above to read more messages to John and in memory of John.
Also, the free server "homepage.com" that currently hosts John's page is
ending their free service as of March 31, so i moved John's page to my
server (steamboats.com). I hope that you could find the new location
through the search engines.

I first heard John play at St Michael's and All Angels Church in
Langley Park, MD in the late '50s. I was inspired, emulated, learned
and copied from him and the music is still with me. I only knew him
briefly, but his memeory persists indelible as the tunes I still play.

this is surreal. i just now decided to log into FAHEY on the internet
for the very first time and suddenly i'm reading words and
sentences here in this guestbook which indiate john has passed.
yet, i know nothing of what has happened. i first heard john in the
late 1960s and his music, especially the most haunted, was the
perfect soundtrack for my existence at that time. i remember
hearing "on the beach at waikiki" and i could not stop playing the
song. there was this demented two- or three-day period once
when i think i played the song over and over literally about 200 or
300 times IN A ROW. i saw john play in a small room at UCLA
around this time; he had a tub full of beers. then before or later, i
can't recall, we saw him at the bar at the ratskeller or the
bratskeller or some stucco-looking bar in westwood. his music
always has a way of making me feel pleasantly psychotic, for what
this is worth. best to all. -- daveb

I've been a Fahey fan since the late 50's. Bought his first "Blind Joe
death" album from Gene Rosenthal who started Takoma Records in his
fathers basement studio. Gene and I were good friends until we lost
track of each other in the 70's & Takoma moved to Santa Monica. I
followed John from the "D.C." area to California & was on his "scene"
in Berkely in the early 60's and Laural Canyon in the late 60's. Lost
track of him personally since the 70's but kept track of his music all
the while. Got his "Transfiguration of Blind Joe Death" CD about a year
ago. It's very touching that his death has caused the reuniting of so
many of his lifelong fans at this time.

I met Fahey just once in LA in the early 60s, but his music has been

Sorry to hear John died.
Have been sorta obsessed with his music since late 1970s.
Saw him perform once in Santa Monica and five times in Seattle
area 1980-92, and had the pleasure of talking to him once or
twice. I have just about the entire discography on vinyl, and
remember one time between sets at the Backstage in Ballard I
talked with him briefly in a small room where he was tuning up
and told him I was having trouble finding a copy of Of Rivers and
Religion. He told me to forget about that and buy the Laurie
Anderson record with "O Superman," so he turned me on to her
music, which I love.
I had John autograph a GHS guitar wrapper between sets at the
Silver Spoon in Duvall back in about 1983.
His music is beauty.

I cried last night, when I saw Mr. Fahey's obituary. I had the
extraordinary good fortune to be exposed to his "Of Rivers and Religion"
album almost 30 years ago, and have purchased many others in the long
years since. I was also fortunate in having seen him play a few
concerts, including a fine time at a small bar in Corvallis, with Terry
Robb.

I've worn out three vinyl prints and a couple of taped copies of Mr.
Fahey's first Christmas album, we play it many, many times during the
season.

My gratitude to Mr. Fahey for all of the exceptional musical
performances and recordings that it was my privilege to hear.

And I liked the way he laughed.

John... you took us into the void, but you promised you would bring us
back. You always did, but not until you had taken us on the incredible
journey of your music. I will always remember the times I spent with
you... lighting fireworks in the street in front of your house on Palms
Blvd.... sitting in your car after a show at the Golden Bear as you
went on about an old girlfriend you missed... and sitting at the stages
edge, intently listening as you took us into the void. Now you are
there. Enjoy your trip there John, you will be sorely missed.

Actually, I'm signing in too late for John to know that I visited. But
I hope that he knew that there were alot of people like me who listened
to his music for over thirty years, saw him whenever he came to town
and for whom his music was an inspiration and a light. I hope that
somebody writes him as eloquent a funeral song as he wrote for the
likes of John Hurt. Bye bye John. RIP

A friend told me that John had died yesterday. He brought alot of
joy into my life, and into the lives of those people who loved his music.
An old friend, Richard Hite, brother of Canned Heat singer Bob Hite,
turned me on to John's music long ago. Richard claimed John was his first
guitar teacher, and the reason for Canned Heat's success. I have passed
John's music down to many friends and family members in the years since.
They had all become fans.I wish all of John's family and friends, and
fans the best in this difficult time. I suggest it is time to celebrate
his life.

I am very sad to hear of John's passing - the Blind Joe Death albums of
the 60s were a great inspiration to me. I haven't heard his more recent
work but I'll always remember the first few notes on Legend from way
back. I felt a chill down my spine and that weird feeling in your
stomach when something incredible happens. I had to play the album all
the way through several times without stopping and turned many of my
friends on to it.
Thanks you, John.

You leave a legacy of moving music that will live on.
May you find peace in your afterlife.
I'm glad to have spent some time with you in Berkeley and LA in the early
1970s. It was short but almost sweet and I recall your feet.

I was truly saddened when I heard of Mr. Fahey's death. I have enjoyed
his unique view of music since I was 13 (30 years). I have sat and
listened to his recordings for hours letting them take me off into
different times and spaces. No other artist has approached the guitar
in such a simple, honest and humorous way.

I just heard youre dead and it stirred some memories of Berkeley
in the 60s when I first met you.

I remember Nathan Shapiro and I got a ride down to LA from you.
Bill Barth came too. You drove the whole way, nonstop, as I recall.
I really had to piss when we arrived.

You stayed with Nathan at his parents' house and Barth stayed
with me in my parents' house. The next day I turned you on to a jug
of valium and you gave me a Death Chants from the trunk of your
car. That was the original Death Chants which I always liked
better than the later revised version(s). I wish I still had it.

I dont remember when it was, but Nathan and I were also at your
wedding to Jan Liebowitz.

This is all very sad. Nathan is dead, now youre dead. I wonder
how Bill Barth is doing.

Sad youre gone. Im going to buy that video you did with Elizabeth
Cotton which I found on the web just now. Take care, so to speak.

Hi-

I am saddended to hear John has gone on to jam with John Hurt and Libby
Cotton.

I spent a good part of my teenage years learning to play his pieces. I
have seen him play several times in Berkeley in the 60s and later in
Seattle. There is a giant hole in my music universe. I will never
forget him; his music will jump outa my guitar as long as I play...

Peace to your soul, JF, thanks for a river of sound that will live
forever...

My husband and I (both 39) have recently become very interested in your
work and are quite surprised at ourselves for being so ignorant of you
for so long. It all started unassumingly enough, last October, while
visiting my brother in Knoxville and attending the Junior League's annual
Bag-A-Bargain. We are record collectors and Tony headed straight for the
used vinyl which were being sold for $1.00 a piece. We have over a
thousand albums, but of course are always on the lookout for more. He
assembled a nice pile of some "gap fillers" and picked up a record by
someone with whom we were not familiar, John Fahey. We took it home,
listened to it and were just blown away. It was so-o-o-o-o..."Revolution
No. 9", but could not have been influenced by that composition because
No. 9 was created about 10 years later. This guy was very different and
very ahead of his time. We wanted to know more about him and if he was
still creating.

I would like to point out that though we are not experts

Hello John,
I have been a big fan since I was a sweaty teenager. I had discovered
mississipi delta blues and went out and bought myself a 1930 national
steel to slide on. After that I bought an old Student Prince. I'm an
artist to tell you the truth and it was great to see a piece of your art
work. I looked you up to see if you had a page, because I wanted to do
this piece called "tower of babbling" and it needs to be emmitting all
sorts of sounds. A sound scape if you will. My own work is all over
the place because of all my various interest. Please check out my site
if you have an opportunity.
All the best,
